In Valencia May 17 Dr Juan Negrin, a Socialist ex-treasury minister, began efforts to form Spain’s sixth civil war government. President Azana named Negrin as predesignate after Largo Caballero failed to unite parties. Negrin, 48, former Madrid medical professor, long socialist figure. An air raid Saturday night left about 40 dead and caused extensive damage.

Harrisburg May 17. Relief rolls dropped by 29 persons to 151,495 families and individuals, totaling 455,055 needy eligible for aid. Direct relief costs, excluding administration and special programs, were 1,100,311 dollars, down 20,082 from the prior week, marking the sixth straight weekly reduction.

Gilmore Bell, age 23, employee at the G E plant, died with his wife in a tragedy. He was a son of Harry M Bell and grandson of Mrs Mary Jane Bell of 1161 Waterstreet Indiana. A 1929 Indiana High School graduate, he attended the General Electric School at Schenectady and later moved to Bridgeport Connecticut as an assistant in the radio research laboratory. He was recently rated a Radio Engineer and married Marie McJilton of Schenectady in July 1934. They had a daughter Arlene, two, and he is survived by his father, one brother Thomas H Bell, and their infant daughter. The father left for Connecticut after receiving word at 3:20 a.m.
