Salvage crews pried into compartments aboard the USS Valcour after a collision with the coal collier Thomas Tracy five miles off Cape Henry. Eleven crewmen died, 16 injured, and 25 unaccounted for include the ship’s officers. The Valcour towed to Norfolk Naval Base. engine room and fuel fires hampered entry. Captain Eugene Tatum and Comdr D G Parker remained at their posts unhurt as 32 Norfolk crewmen joined to relieve others.

House Gets Bill On Oath Program
Harrisburg May 16 The Senate passed a bill detailing who may administer the oath of office to Pennsylvania's Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The measure allows Justices of the State Supreme Court Court of Record judges or any authorized oath administrator to perform the oath. The chamber also sent to the House a bill granting occupational disease benefits to nurses contracting tuberculosis while serving in hospitals and sanitoria and a blood test based paternity evidentiary bill.
