Flying a 90 horsepower single motor merroplane with 110 mph cruising speed he landed at Burwood after a hop from Bangor Maine. He arrived in Bangor Sunday night claiming a non stop flight from St Louis Missouri. Backman described as 27 year old slim blond spoke broken English and was among three aviators in a race from America to Sweden. His plane carried radio gear and few instruments for trans Atlantic flying. His seat is narrow and a fuel tank blocked his right view. The cabin contained auxiliary tanks. In Lisbon May 16 French flying boat Lieutenant De Vaisseau Paris landed on the Tagus river at 1226 p m completing the first leg of an experimental flight from Biscarrosse near Bordeaux to New York with one more stop planned at the Azores. The six motor craft carried a crew of eight.
