The government will acquire three Boeing 707 jet transports at five million dollars each for use by President Eisenhower and other senior officials on long trips. Deliveries may occur by year’s end. planes will not be assigned to Eisenhower alone. The President will often use his Columbine III propeller plane for many trips.

Kidnappers Surrender in Clarksdale After Chase
POPLAR BLUFF Missouri two of three kidnapers surrendered at Clarksdale Mississippi after eluding Arkansas troopers. Linda Rollins 18 and Archie Moore 25 both of Desloge Missouri identified Billy Newhouse as the youth who left them in Memphis. George Tubbs 29 was slain during the spree and Tubbs escaped from a restaurant before being stabbed. Newhouse allegedly threw the murder weapon into the Mississippi River at Memphis.

Soviets launch third and largest Sputnik
Moscow AP reports the Soviet Union launched its third and largest Sputnik, an 11.9 foot cone weighing about 2,919 pounds. Tass said the satellite, part of the IGY program, carried extensive instruments to study the upper atmosphere with no living passenger. It completes a orbit roughly every 106 minutes, reaches about 1,168 miles high, and crosses from the Arctic toward the Antarctic, over the Moscow area in a southwesterly to northeasterly path.

Dr Rhodes R Stabley chair of the English Speech department at State Teachers College Indiana died today at 9 a.m. in Indiana Hospital aged 57. He had been hospitalized since May 1 after a heart attack at his desk in the college office. He served as department chair since September 1941 and had a 40 year career in education.
