Police seized two dynamite bombs in an Oldsmobile coupe parked behind Lauderbach Griest Co wholesale grocers at about 2 15 A M. John Koplas name listed on the car license with a Vincent DeMino sticker, leading to his arrest for questioning by District Attorney Wm Ruddock.
State bounty listings show payments for April on animals including crays, pox weasels, and goshawks with totals in the thousands. The Marion Center 4-H Flower Club will meet at Marion High School at 4 p.m. Tuesday May 16 with County Agent Warner to plan summer activities. Swing-Out is scheduled tonight at State Teachers College at 8:30 p.m. local time if weather allows.
President Roosevelt urges Congress to authorize a federal program re organizing industry public works banking reforms and railroad relief within a month. He seeks passage of Norris bill blue sky measure budget balancing tax proposal and related energy and gasoline levies as part of rapid relief and reform efforts.
New York New Jersey and Connecticut Jews endorsed an economic boycott against Germany at a Metropolitan area conference led by the American League for the Defense of Jewish Rights. Nearly 600 delegates from 488 organizations approved, aiming to expand nationwide and seek international backing, including England.
A bandit locked five men in the Ernest Mahoning Supply Store vault and fled with 500 dollars. Police later captured him near Ernest, where $447 was recovered. Victims included Ernest Forsha Bell and Byrnes Winwood, held about 20 minutes. two others trapped in the refrigerator. The robber entered by a window around 8:30 a m and may have stayed overnight. Poona India May 15 Mahatma Gandhi, cheered by reconciliation with his estranged son Hiraldas, entered the eighth day of a fast in what doctors call satisfactory condition. They note occasional nausea but say his condition is stable.
Mr Loughlin states he expects Max Baer to defeat Max Schmeling in their June 8 Yankee Stadium bout. He predicts Baer will win as the favored heavyweight challenger, signaling strong confidence ahead of the title clash.
Atlantic City May 15 Max Schmeling appears a clear favorite to dethrone Max Baer in their upcoming Yankee Stadium bout. Baer, bigger yet showing telegraphed punches and a vulnerable chin, was mocked by veteran Tommy Loughran after Baer’s six-round sparring with light opponents. Loughran warned Baer to alter his style or risk a lopsided loss.
Ernest Heilbrun aged 27 died from internal injuries after a collision with a car driven by Frank Emerick aged 19 on the Indiana Punxsutawney highway four miles north of Marion Center. The crash occurred about 4 45 p m with Heilbrun pinned under the steering wheel and later pronounced dead at Indiana hospital. In the Heilbrun car were Miss Cecelia Lewis Indiana R D I and in the Emerick car was Paul Steele of Mars. The crash was investigated by the local motor patrol which said both drivers were near the center of the highway. Continued on Page Two.
Indiana Pa mayor proclaims May 17 18 1933 set aside to honor World War I veterans and the VFW with the showing of The Big Drive at the Ritz Theatre urging public attendance to support those who served for world peace. Signatory B H Lichteberger mayor urges residents to attend at least one performance.
Two notable locals, Elder Sharp of Shefoota and W J Smith of Glen Campbell, died over the weekend and yesterday morning respectively. Smith, 78, long served as tax collector and registrar, a Methodist Episcopal Church member, with survivors including widow Mary J Wetzel Smith. continued obituary to follow. Indiana County authorities probe a mysterious double murder and arson at a farm near Saltsburg. James Allison, 77, and sister Hester Jane Allison, 74, were found murdered and the farmhouse burned to conceal their deaths. Auto tracks point away from the scene. no vehicle owned by the couple. Neighbors recall the couple as comfortable but not wealthy.
Chicago May 15 The Man’s most formidable cancer fighting agency a giant 14 foot X ray tube began operation today at Mercy Hospital. John Mulcahy the first patient to receive treatment suffers from severe stomach cancer. Four radio therapy specialists led by Dr Herbert Schmitz tested the device deemed to exceed all existing models in output and potential. The machine, dedicated last Thursday night with designer W J Coolidge present, promises to reach deep tumors in the stomach bones chest and abdomen where cures have been rare.
Milk shortage fears in Chicago eased as McHenry and Kane county farmers resumed deliveries after a strike. Elgin leaders pledged to suspend actions while awaiting relief under Illinois Commerce Commission supervision and a proposed wholesale price rise to 1.73 per hundredweight. In Wisconsin, picket line tensions persisted with authorities patrolling highways after a pond milk convoy was disrupted and a truck seized.
