In Washington President Eisenhower discussed a revived German plan as a test tube operation and warned advisers against misreading any gesture as a shift toward neutralization. Officials stressed U S policy remains unchanged ahead of Dulles conference.
Thousands of American mining leaders and foreign visitors attended the opening of the 1957 Coal Show in Cleveland, held with the American Mining Congress convention. Five million dollars worth of equipment on display includes shuttle cars, conveyors, and boring machines, aimed at reducing backbreaking work in coal mining. Officials expect more than 10,000 visitors for technical sessions and exhibits as the event runs through Thursday.
Mining Congress since 1927, held every two years, opened with expert papers. In London Power Minister Lord Mills announced in the House of Lords that Britain will end gasoline rationing tomorrow reflecting the easing oil shortage from the Suez crisis. Rationing began December 17 as Suez Canal blockages and ruptured pipelines disrupted Middle East oil deliveries.
Four Washington County men are missing after their 16-foot cabin cruiser was found partly submerged in Lake Erie about a mile off Conneaut Ohio. The boat, owned by John W. Trump 26 of Canonsburg is presumed to have carried the men on a weekend fishing trip. Names include John Skarski 35 Stanley Walter 84 and Lester Pierce 36 all from Canonsburg and Lawrence Pa. The search by Coast Guard continues with no trace yet of the missing men.
