Washington May 14 The prosecution in the trial of Kenneth Romney former House Sergeant at Arms called for testimony from a former cashier in Romney s office to support charges that he concealed a 143 863 shortage in office funds Witness John Oberholser began working for the sergeant at arms office in 1922 The office serves as a house bank The jury has heard from Albert Fahmeyer former assistant cashier that a bookkeeper Frank J Mahoney admitted eight years ago embezzling 25 066 and Romney sought to cover the shortage by deducting from other office employees pay Fangmeyer said more than 20 000 was collected this way and added to the office funds He testified Romney discussed shortages with the late William B Bankhead but higher authorities said they did not want action The jury has also seen a letter Romney allegedly wrote in 1931 to former Rep H Wick Southwick of Florida saying we have been jointly guilty of fraud Government contends Romney used office money to cover losses in Florida real estate operations.

Fire at Ransom Home and Hospital Forces 300 Patients Out
A fire at the Ransom Home and Hospital, a mental institution and almshouse near Pittston Pennsylvania, drove more than 300 patients from the main building. One elderly patient Violet Besecker Brown died of a heart attack in the hospital yard during the blaze. Nurses repeatedly entered burning wards to evacuate patients as flames rose from the roof and smoke filled the building. All patients were housed in nearby institutions overnight.
