Prank Fire Kills Two Girls in Chicago Fort
In Chicago on the northwest side a group of boys set fire to a vacant lot playhouse or fort trapping Deana Feht 13 and Margaret Roelle 12 who apparently suffocated. Richard Boyle 14 escaped with help from his brother Dennis 16 though his eyebrows and clothing were singed. Police say the fire was deliberately set without malice as a prank by the boys who entered the shanty with the girls and piled heavy objects at the door before igniting foam rubber fragments to stink the space.

Unarmed Officer Confronts Despondent Gunman in Pittsburgh
In Pittsburgh a police lieutenant disarmed a gunman, George Walters, who had barricaded himself with his four children. Walters, despondent over job loss and separation from his wife, aimed a German P38 at Lt. Vanselow and vowed to die. After a tense stand, Vanselow and Walters walked to a lot.
