Thirteen American airmen who crashed in the New Guinea area arrive in Australia to pick up new planes and resume the fight. One survivor endured seven hours afloat after a bomber exploded during a forced landing, aided by a life jacket inflator and natives who cared for the group on the coast before sailing to Port Moresby.
Seventeen loaded coal cars of an Erie Railroad freight train derailed today in Corry's business section, blocking east and westbound tracks. One trainman, Joseph Klinger of Meadville, was knocked down in the caboose and injured his head. Rail workers attributed the wreck to a broken axle.
Washington May 12 The Go Home sign greeted motorists as 8.5 million owners in 17 coastal states and DC begin alphabetical registration for ration cards. About one third of applicants may be non essential and limited to 21 gallons in a 47 day period May 16 to July. Motorists needing cars for work or business will be prioritized while a full rationing system is prepared.
In Washington May 1 2 farm bloc senators propose relaxing parity rules to permit some sales of government held wheat for livestock feed under conditions. Senator Russell D Gat said a substitute amendment may replace a House provision seen as restricting below parity pricing. The aim is a compromise acceptable to the administration with extra rations tied to mileage and criminal penalties for false statements. Tourists are advised to return home before rationing begins and must apply for ration cards if staying. Essential vehicles may receive unlimited purchases with X cards.

U S District Attorney announces Donald Kintner aged 20 will face a sabotage charge for shooting New York Central engineer F J Becker near Elyria Ohio last Friday. The act aimed to disrupt war material shipments to aid Germany. The engineer survived. Kintner faces up to 30 hours imprisonment and $10000 fine.
Obituaries detail the deaths of Julie Ann Summersville Ludington and Mrs Julie Ann Ludington along with two other local figures. Survivors include spouses children grandchildren and siblings. Services are set for Plumcreek Church of the Brethren Morrison Funeral Home Punxsutawney and interments Greenwood Cemetery Armagh and Punxsutawney.
Kansas City May 13 The American War Dads a new non profit organization formed to support service members. Nat Milgram inspired by sees soldiers donating pay for war bonds plans to help with letters recreation clubs and gift packages for troops. Milgram says inductees deserve a rousing send off and better mail at camps and ships.
Berlin reports a full scale battle on the Kerch Peninsula since a May attack by German and Romanian forces with strong air support. A British London source says Germans repulsed with heavy losses and fell back to original positions except for limited Red Army pressure. Shipping losses include two tankers totalling 5 000 tons and several small vessels. A spokesman described Crimean action as the first great offensive since winter. New weapons announced by Hitler are claimed to be in use. Wilhelmstrasse denies gas use and says no gas will be used and future battles will prove it.
