William Hosler, 26, was saved from a muddy coal pit on Pitch Mountain after being buried for a day. He was found twisted and injured, semi conscious, as rescuers worked with a small can to remove the clay. State police kept onlookers distant while lights aided the effort before he was rushed to a hospital.
Governor Earle ordered a public hearing on a measure to provide blind pensions by need. Relief Director de Schweinitz said federal matching applies only to the needy up to 30 a month, with 10 250 blind beneficiaries in Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh May 11 market report shows slow produce demand with apples and potatoes trading at steady ranges across several regional varieties. Livestock prices rise modestly with hogs up 15 to 25 cents, cattle and calves steady to slow, and lambs priced at up to 14 dollars for spring varieties.
In Harrisburg on May 11 the House rejected an amendment to outlaw private hunting preserves, keeping the 14 year old game code on track for final passage. The code would require 25 percent of game released on private tracts to go to the state and cap harvest limits for pheasants partridges and mallard ducks. Provisions include penalties for property destruction by hunters and drunken hunting prosecutions, with tracts potentially offered as refuges by farmers. Trapping raccoons would be prohibited and the commission could establish segregated rabbit breeding areas.
Washington May 11 The Senate judiciary committee began its final week of study on the Roosevelt court bill by considering two alternative proposals. Senator Burke urged a nine member court with compulsory retirement at 75 and seven votes to override Congress. Senator McAdoo proposed expanding to 15 and then allowing states to vote on a 25 year hold. The committee plans to vote next week on recommending the Roosevelt bill as many oppose both the bill and any compromise. Five Democratic senators spoke against adoption. Burke warned a constitutional amendment would end the bitter struggle and hinder recovery. Senators McCarran Gerry Copeland and Bailey opposed the bill at a Philadelphia meeting of the defenders of the constitution.
