A stubborn blaze gutted the Rodgers Building on Federal Street in Pittsburgh's Northside, a century-old four story structure housing shops on the ground floor and 11 families above. About 225000 dollars in damage, 26 fire companies fought flames, 15 firefighters treated for smoke and minor injuries, and sixteen nearby houses were evacuated as darkness fell.
Mike Bellas of Josephine enters a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter in the April 12 shooting death of Helen Golinsky, 28, of Coral. Witness John Greczek also pleads guilty to burglary and larceny in related cases. both await sentencing on June 19. Bellas admitted firing five .28 caliber bullets at Golinsky during a wine party at his Josephine home.
More than 13 000 alumni of the State Teachers College Indiana Pa invited to return for the seventy fifth commencement May 26 29 1950. In Geneva on May 10, Russia’s delegate walked out of a League of Red Cross Societies Executive Committee meeting after the committee rejected a formal exclusion order for Nationalist China. No Chinese delegate attended, despite invitations, as Soviet delegates left with papers in protest after a 12 to 1 vote. The session, chaired by Basil O’Connor, discussed Palestine relief and Greek child repatriation in Eastern Europe.
Paris report states Rita Hayworth may join Islam during a Moslem wedding ceremony for Iran's Princess Fatemeh and Vincent Hillyer. Two automobile accidents were reported yesterday in the borough. A two car crash on Shryock Avenue involved Floyd N. Ruffner Indiana RD 3 and Russell Blystone Indiana RD with damages about 175 dollars. Another crash on Wayne Avenue involved William Sinclair Huntingdon and Lester Piffer 1190 Waterstreet Indiana with damages about 50 dollars.
Blairsville Volunteer Fire Company aims to raise 20000 for a new fire hall and has collected 9200 so far. Firemen sell Building Fund Notes at 100 each. Also, Ed Dinant will preach nightly through May 14 at 7 30 p m at Fundamental Baptist Church 16 South 0th Street Indiana Pa.
Christy Bergman, 62, of Indiana, was arrested last night on drunk and disorderly charges. Police records describe Bergman as a frequent offender.
Governor James H. Duff blamed his rift with former U. S. Senator Joseph Grundy on Grundy’s failure to keep a pledge while Duff says he fulfilled the platform Grundy authored. Duff and rival John S. Fine campaigned in Butler and Kittanning as Grundy backed different foes.

Indiana Chamber of Commerce industrial development committee and three county commissioners moved toward securing a 20 acre factory site off Route 80 south of town. Eleven acres are county owned, part of the County Farm. The land sale hinges on Welfare Department approval. The seeking manufacturer wants a strictly factory site that can be purchased.
President Truman on a cross country train tour expresses pleasure at large crowds. In Rawlins Wyoming Police Chief Elmer Wilk estimates about 3000 gathered around the presidential train. Mayor Sam Tully calls Truman a proven campaigner while Truman says the trip is non political and hopes to return soon.
Harry A. De Butts of Southern Railway urges Congress to outlaw rail strikes. He warns a strike against Santa Fe New York Central and Pennsylvania would cause immediate paralysis of vast regions, threaten starvation and disease, and cripple economic activity.
NEW YORK May 10 AP hope ebbed for Dominick Atteo a 49 year old man trapped in a caved in wall shaft in a Brooklyn garage. Rescue workers frantically dug a secondary shaft and knocked out a dirt wall to reach him as a priest sprinkled holy water and last rites were given. His wife Maria collapsed at the shaft mouth and his son John 28 mourned beside him as doctors feared he was sinking fast after being burned when a cigarette exploded from oxygen below.
Berlin May 10 marking ten years since Hitler unleashed a blitzkrieg that struck the Netherlands Belgium Luxembourg and France. The rapid campaign saw Holland fall in five days Belgium 18 days and Paris fall in five weeks as Hitler planned victory celebrations in the French capital. Berlin today has moved past confetti and monuments to the war’s memory while concerns rise over potential future atom or hydrogen bomb warfare.
More than 15 000 Westinghouse Electric Corporation employees joined a payroll deduction plan to buy common stock. About 16.1 percent of personnel participate, with a half million shares set aside for sale to employees at four dollars under the market average.
