Compromise Sought On Reciprocal Trade

Washington report says Democratic House leaders urged President Eisenhower to soften his reciprocity trade extension plan or risk delaying his trade program in Congress. The Ways and Means Committee paused action until Monday as pressure mounts for high tariffs and support wavers among Republicans and Democrats. Eisenhower, speaking at a GOP gathering, warned that world trade is essential for national security and American industry.

NATO rejects Kremlin bid for summit ground rules

NATO foreign ministers drafted a communique asserting unity among the United States Britain and France to pursue talks in Moscow while resisting Soviet attempts to veto issues at the summit. They also heard Dutch Foreign Minister Luns say Communists may seize power in Indonesia and US Secretary of State Dulles outline policy as Egyptian funds frozen since Nasser’s Suez action were released after compensation to canal stockholders.

GOP Prospects Bright Says Eisenhower in Speech

President Eisenhower declares GOP prospects bright for November election but reserves right to withhold support from Republicans not backing his program. Communities win in Pennsylvania chamber contest

Thirty cities received cash prizes from $100 to $1500 in a statewide community development contest by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce. Top winners were Washington, Oil City, St. Marys, Myerstown, and Millerstown, each $1500. Brookville Glove Firm Exec Killed in Turnpike Crash

Folsom Resigns as Secretary of Welfare

Washington AP Marion Folsom resigns today as secretary of welfare to pursue private life. President Eisenhower names Arthur Flemming of Ohio Wesleyan University to succeed him, with Flemming set to head the Health Education and Welfare Department. Folsom, 64, cites personal reasons and will depart between July 15 and Aug 1.

Bids Opened for Franklin School Wing Project

Bids on the proposed new wing for Benjamin Franklin Elementary were opened by the West Pike School directors. None were accepted pending General Authority approval. unofficial low bids totaled 226,058, well under the 288,600 estimate. The board adopted a 1958-59 budget of 214,343 and scheduled spring events including a May 21 concert and May 29 preschool registration with staggered testing by surname.

Loblaw truck unloaded as pickets protest Pittsburgh to Ohio moves

A Loblaw truck from Youngstown arrived at an Indiana Loblaw store at noon with no incident while Teamsters Local 249 picketed nearby. Pickets have been at Loblaw stores in the district as the Pittsburgh warehouse operation shifts to Ohio. Lawyers seek an injunction to curb picketing at 23 stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania after last Friday’s strike following furloughs.

Contracts Awarded For Jobs

The Indiana Borough council awarded street and sewer contracts totaling 85 488 and received an annexation petition from Cecil Spadafora to add about 30 acres from White Township to the borough. The petition, signed by ten residents, goes to Borough Solicitor Thomas Barber for legal review.

8 Million Cu. Ft. Gas Well Here

A natural gas well in Buffington Township was recently hydrofracted, increasing production from 2,000,000 to 18,000,000 cubic feet per day. Drilled by Felmont Gas and Oil Co. and Columbia Carbon on the Blair farm, it ranks as one of Indiana County’s best producing wells.

R A Walker announces relinquishment of his two year ownership of the Saltsburg Press effective June 1. The 6 year publisher will semi retire and work from home while remaining a Saltsburg resident.
