The U S Court of Appeals in Philadelphia has taken under advisement an appeal by Otto Pritchard of Pittsburgh 62 who lost a suit claiming Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co cigarettes caused his cancer. A Pittsburgh District Court directed verdict of acquittal last year.
A derecho like tornado struck Wilburton and Dover injuring over 100 with one fatality near Dover and eight injured near Lake Hamilton. Survivors describe a sudden wall of rain and debris as the storm tore through homes scattering family members. The town of Howe reported widespread destruction and a doctor’s office remaining intact as emergency crews aided the injured.
In celebration of Music Week the Indiana Public Schools broadcast tomorrow at 8:15 pm over the local station features choral groups from Indiana High School. Eugene Thomas directs the Junior High Girls Chorus the Junior High Mixed Chorus and the Senior High Girls Chorus. Music Week runs from May through May 13 as noted in Rand Gazette Classified Ads.
The U S space flyer Clifford B. Shepard Jr. landed safely in the Atlantic off Florida aboard the Lake Champlain after a 15 minute suborbital hop aboard Freedom 7. The townspeople of Derry N H celebrated and hailed the pilot and his parents while Kennedy and Congress praised the achievement and pledged further space funding.

In New York AP Frank Russo a long time bootblack was honored by the CIT Corporation for 35 years of service. The company staged a Russo Day with Russo as honorary president and received a watch and $540 in checks. He posed for posters in the CIT building at 650 Madison Ave and enjoyed a celebratory lunch as 500 employees cheered. Russo who arrived from Sanfelè Italy 40 years ago earns 25 to 50 cents per shine and says he has polished perhaps 10 million shoes. He lives in Stamford Connecticut and is married with two children.
Irish playwright Brendan Behan exits St. Mary's hospital in San Francisco after a four day champagne binge. Behan told reporters I feel smashing as his wife described finding him admitted on Thursday.
President notes grounds for encouragement amid Geneva talks on a nuclear test ban pact. He backs stronger NATO ties, closer Japan relations, and sees India's development program as a driver for freedom in Asia. Kennedy cautions on energy and security, urging broader national effort beyond paying taxes for defense.
