Johnson Urges Democratic Unity At $100 Dinner

In Harrisburg, Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson urged Pennsylvania Democrats to unite to meet national and global challenges. Philadelphia Prisoner Recaptured After Escape

NEW YORK RP Rufus Hawking, one of two Philadelph ia inmates who fled Moyamensing prison on April 30, was captured by the FBI in a hotel on West 45th Street. He had $2.59 of $60 to $70 hidden in a shoe heel and said he kept the money for five months. Hawkins traveled with James F. genkeis, then by taxi to Trenton and by train to New York before they split. Hawkins has not seen the other man since.

Two Union City Houses Fire Damages Borough

Fire swept two two story frame houses in Union City Erie County causing about 20000 dollars in damage. Four firefighters were hurt including WSRL Fire Chief Francis Wontenay who reported the blaze began with a 50 gallon drum of gasoline in a garage and exploded.

Senate Probe Scours Labor Peace Payments In New York

The Senate Labor Management Committee expects testimony from newspaper executives and a dozen deliverers union officials on whether payments were made to unionists or gangsters to secure labor peace. Witnesses include leaders from New York Times, Mirror, Journal-American and other distributors. Witnesses invoked the Fifth Amendment amid questions over more than 400000 in distributer records.

Legion Team Forming In Blairsville

Blairsville Post 407 of the American Legion met last night with 25 members present. Joe Lutz announced the Junior Legion baseball program has secured Adam Cardelino as coach and registration attracted 20 boys. tryouts set for May 8 at Legion Field. Memorial Day plans and Legion School Awards were discussed. delegates were elected for the State American Legion Convention in Pittsburgh July 16 to 18. Memorial service for Edward P. Iseman was held with Chaplain John A. Ackerson. lunch with the auxiliary followed.

Limit on real estate assessment increases proposed in House bill

Harrisburg AP reports Allegheny County real estate assessments would face a 20 percent cap on increases within any three year period under a new House bill introduced by Republicans Willard F. Agnew Jr Dennis D. Stevens and Laurence V. Gibb.

Sir Winston Churchill visits John Foster Dulles and General George C. Marshall at Walter Reed Hospital accompanied by President Eisenhower.
