Harrisburg May 6 Gov James H Duff declared pollution of Pennsylvania streams the number one health menace. He noted water in 80 percent of homes comes from streams and praised the clean streams project but urged active citizen support to push it forward.
In Sydney on May 6 a fungus known as blackfellow's bread is explored as a raw material for sculptures and golf balls. The fungus, often sold in 20 pound lumps, resembles potato when dug and can be cut with a knife but dries into rocklike hardness in the sun. It is unclear if Aborigines ate it. children in the outback shape it into cricket balls and some claim golf balls carved from it can be polished after drying.

Atlantic City reports that Pennsylvania leads with a 33 gallon per capita beer consumption per year, followed by Wisconsin at 29 and Nevada 26.6. New Jersey and New York tie for fourth at 26.1 gallons.
