Anthracite conferees reach major contract agreement
In New York on May 6 1940 operators and United Mine Workers of America agreed on major points of a new contract after weeks of deadlock. A two year agreement was expected to be signed today at 1 p m EST. The talks, led with labor department aid, aimed to end a suspension of operations in Pennsylvania mines. The existing contract expired March 31 and wage disputes centered on a 20 percent increase versus restoring 1918 levels. The miners sought a six hour day five day week and union dues checkoff.
