In a tense dispute over eight hour days wage scales and check off dues a tentative accord is discussed. Miners fear a closed shop while operators defend a signed contract. The agreement aims to raise payroll to $9,000,000 and extend benefits, but public cost and consumer impact remain debated amid broader industry instability.
Gatty Sellars presented a varied organ program last evening at the First United Presbyterian Church. The crowd enjoyed The March of Nations and The Storm set to Lucern Cathedral, two own compositions, plus two pieces using the Cathedral Chimes. Miss Mary Jamison led the choir with creditable pipe work as Sellars delivered both classical and modern selections in an engaging if not peak performance.
Charles Quinton Stiles, 18 months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Stiles of Dilltown, died Monday evening from pneumonia superinduced by measles. Funeral services and interment were held today.
Mrs Margaret Coy a well known resident of Indiana received a birthday card shower last Saturday with over 200 cards. Kathryn Moorhead of South Fifth Street left for a northern and western trip this morning aboard the B R and P line bound for Elmira New York. She expects to be away about six weeks.
Washington May 3 With the administration awaiting the submarine ultimatum reply another wave of peace sentiment sweeps the country. Leaders in both houses seek Americas place in the sun and the chance for mediation toward peace. Senators Newlands Nevada and Phelan California push a resolution to pave the way for peace.
About sixty five boys gathered at the M G A building to hear Rev BE Gearhart discuss the Indian. Tomorrow evening Henry Beers will speak on Home Gardening a practical subject for all who attend. Beers, a home gardener, promises useful tips for starting or improving a garden. All boys are invited to attend.

In Braddock and Rankin a day of unrest culminated in a riot at the Edgar Thomson steel plant. About 2,000 citizens sworn as deputies patrolled streets as rioters attacked plant facilities, injured workers, and wounded two deputies. Foreigners reported killed, and DA BR H Jackson moves to deport those tied to the trouble. Deputies and guards returned fire from riot guns and revolvers, with snipers targeting them from doorways. The mob was eventually driven back, then returned to clash twice more before retreating as plant authorities held the line.
Deputies on guard at Westinghouse facilities in Wilmerding and East Pittsburgh were sent to the scene. They fought their way to the sides of fellow deputies as attackers pressed inward. After a several minute clash the mob was forced from the plant gates and compelled to seek shelter behind the walls.
Fire from high angle guns and British acroplains are believed to have damaged the German Zeppelins that took part in the raid over Northeastern England and the southeast, as reported in London on May 3.
Reported last night German raiders targeted major ports Grimsby Hartlepool and Newcastle with bombs falling in Yorkshire and Northumberland. A War Office statement on the ward was awaited as the public sought details amid wartime tensions.
