Smuggling Tried Aboard British Cruiser
US customs agents and British authorities probed an international narcotics smuggling ring after heroin and opium were seized aboard the British cruiser HMS Belfast during a goodwill visit to San Francisco. Two Chinese crewmen from Hong Kong were arrested, jade and diamonds found in sugar canisters led to shipwide restrictions, and officials said prosecution lay with Britain. The incident raised questions about ties between the ship and U.S. authorities while the ship was docked off California.
