State Idle Reaches Peak Since WW II

Harrisburg AP reports Pennsylvania April unemployment rose to 509000, the highest level since before World War II, with over 10 percent of the workforce jobless out of 4.6 million. The state paid 41.04 million in unemployment claims and the jobless fund balance fell to 232 million, the lowest since.

Plane lands safely after wheel goes missing at idlewild

An El Al Bristol Britannia with 63 passengers and 11 crew, taking off from London, landed safely at Idlewild after radio alerts indicated a missing left wheel. Ground crews and spectators watched as pilots balanced on the remaining gear. a wheel of similar type had been found in London earlier.

Small Dog Tina Reunited As Reward Mends Hearts

Mrs. Fred Sass found Tina a quiniature French poodle wandering in an alley near Chicago. Tina had been missing since Monday and feared stolen by burglars who ransacked the Shipley apartment. Atty and Mrs. William Shipley offered a $1,000 reward plus a $2,500 mink coat for Tina’s return. Shipley later delivered a $1,000 check to Mrs. Sass, ending the ordeal.

Civil Defense Prepares For County Test

Indiana County Civil Defense Director G W Marbach announced a countywide participation in the nation wide CD test scheduled for Tuesday May 9 to 1 am. Officials will sound a long blast of three to five minutes and residents should tune to local radio. A second three minute wailing blast signals an attack.

Girl, 6 Sought In St. Louis

Police search for six year old Kathryn Hampton missing from a St. Louis slum district after a Wednesday night disappearance. She is the daughter of James and, Mrs. Hampton, described as a mommy's girl and blonde. The case follows a nearby incident where a two year old was hurt two weeks earlier.

Indiana State Teachers College to add buildings to expand enrollment

Indiana State Teachers College plans four new buildings including dormitories and a music arts facility to boost capacity. Current enrollment runs around 2300 to 2400 with fall 1958 projections near 2425 and up to 3100 with full use of existing and new facilities. Bids on the four buildings and the music arts project are set for May and June 1958 with permanent housing for 330 more students and a long awaited music department headquarters.

Reds call Arctic Guard plan a gimmick in U N debate

In a Security Council speech Soviet delegate Arkady Sobolev denounced the Eisenhower Arctic inspection plan as a gimmick arguing it seeks military intelligence from Soviet territory. Golden Rule Crew Jailed In Honolulu

The four men aboard the ketch Golden Rule were jailed in Honolulu on criminal contempt charges after a failed bid to sail toward the mid Pacific nuclear test zone despite court orders. Skipper Albert Smith Bigelow of Cos Cob Connecticut refused bail at arraignment. Crew members include William Huntington, Orion Sherwood, and George Willoughby, all opposing nuclear tests with Quaker or Methodist affiliations.
