The weekend saw a spike in accidents as clear skies and heat drew motorists to highways. Seventeen people died and scores were injured in crashes statewide, including Mrs. Lucille Sandberg in Port Allegany, and multiple fatalities in Lycoming, Allegheny, and Montgomery counties as well as near Lewistown and Philadelphia.
A metal cylinder was found under an orchestra seat at Radio City Music Hall eleven hours after a caller warned of a bomb. Police moved traffic to speed the device to Ft Tilden for examination. The 8 inch by 2 inch cylinder was wrapped in a sock. A 90 minute search followed. the audience was unaware. A similar crude bomb injured two people last year.
Two top defense officials told Congress that Army views were fully considered and rejected before President Eisenhower cut 75,000 Army troops. Secretary Wilson and Admiral Radford testified behind closed doors, saying the cuts would not alter a Korean style war or worsen Red Chinese moves. Ridgway said he learned of the Dec plan with little warning, and Burgess noted overall 90,000 fewer armed forces while combat power remains near 0.97 percent of total force.
A series of property deeds transferring lots and tracts in Salisbury Armstrong Blairsville Pine Indiana Cherry Hill Canoe West Wheatfield Rayne and other townships are recorded for sums largely of one dollar with other considerations. Notable entries include Jack Nees transferring a 13 488 acre Pine Township tract for one dollar and a 1200 dollar Pine Township sale to Stephen Bender.
Paris report cites Bao Dai saying he hopes to return when the Vietnamese situation stabilizes. He condemns the National Revolutionary Committee as extremist conspirators and criticizes Ngo Dinh Diem for pursuing civil war despite Bao Dai’s broad powers. He stayed in France 13 months at Diem’s request to justify that authority.
In Harrisburg a three person team runs Pennsylvania s World War II Veterans Compensation Bureau. Deputy Adjutant General William B Freeland says the office is lean but capable of handling new claims and possible Korean veterans bonus work. The former head Clyde Rankin led the bureau since 1950. a 535 employee peak is recalled in its heyday. A Korean bonus proposal remains in the General Assembly.
The program extends the filing deadline to December 31, 1956 after several two year extensions since 1949. The fund is financed by a 440 million dollar bond issue, with interest payments projected for years. So far 426 million has been paid in 1.34 million checks to veterans or beneficiaries.
