Interstate Commerce probe into newspaper rate hikes planned

Washington May 2 The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered an investigation into five eastern railroads proposed rate increases for newspapers carried in baggage cars within central Freight Association and Trunk Line territories. The involved lines include Pennsylvania, Baltimore and Ohio, Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic, Reading, and Western Maryland. Proposed rises total about 66 percent, with hearings to follow before a final decision. One example shows Pennsylvania planning 30 cents to 60 cents per hundred pounds east of Pittsburgh and Buffalo, same east and west territory adjustments, and 60 cents to 1 dollar for crossing between the two zones.
