Scout Activities Jim Stewart Testimonial Dinner

Jim Stewart, Indiana native and Hollywood star, will be honored at his first hometown testimonial dinner hosted by Friends of Scouting in the William Penn Council. The event at Rustic Lodge on Tuesday May 20 at 7:00 p.m. will also honor his wife Gloria and his father Alex Stewart. The gala celebrates Stewart’s lifelong commitment to scouting and his work as a local and national scout leader.

Girl Drowns Before Eyes Of Witnesses

A 10-year-old girl Janet Sheriff was swept into the rain swollen Susquehanna River as witnesses watched from Front and Paxton streets in Harrisburg. She tumbled into the water near the river bank and drifted downstream toward Reading Co. bridge pier where she was seen briefly before sinking from view. Rescue efforts by bystanders were reported futile.

High Water Threatens Texas Areas

After eight days of rain rivers and streams surged across north and east Texas. The Trinity at Dallas reached 33.7 feet and rose slowly, 3.7 feet above flood stage but below major flood level. About 2,500 people were evacuated in South Dallas though most stayed. Schools closed in east Texas and some oil wells were abandoned. Labor secretary backs quick tax cut to combat recession

Secretary of Labor Mitchell said the administration should decide within 30 to 60 days whether to seek a tax cut as the best anti-recession remedy. He noted recession appears to flatten but no solid improvement ahead and urged restraint on wage and price boosts to avoid government dictation.

GM Maintains Stand On Two Year Contract Offer

General Motors negotiator Lowtis Seaton said the firm will not deviate from its proposal to extend present wage and benefit terms for two years. She claimed the offer is on the table and rejects the idea of maintaining the status quo, citing a minimum $140 million cost to GM. UAW leader Woodcock called it a fine day but repeated the union’s stance that the proposal is not negotiable. Talks resumed with the UAW after the brief pause.

Temporary Hi Building Bids for High School Addition

The Indiana Joint School District approved bids for a six room temporary addition to the focal high school. Elmer R. Hallstrom of DuBois won the general contract at 37 598, Robert Wayne Smith of Indiana the heating work at 5 548 76, Electrical Contractors Association of Altoona the electrical work at 5 628 76. Total low bids 48 774 16 about 6 000 under the architect estimate of 55 000.

Woman slain in Aliquippa as shooter wounded by police

Aliquippa police found 54 year old Clorden Bell dead from a shotgun blast to the heart in a second floor bedroom of James Moore’s home after Moore fired on officers who returned fire. Moore, a 60 year old steelworker, was wounded and arrested following a gun battle on the street. Authorities believe the killing occurred last night.
