CHUNGKING May 1 Chinese field reports admit the fall of Hulao Pass opening the road toward Loyang in Henan. Japanese forces fortify the pass while attacking Loyang and Mihsien. US planes back Chinese troops northwest of Chenghsien as Stilwell’s command reports the first All American tank unit in Northern Burma.

Secretary Knox Is Buried Today at Arlington

Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox is to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with Navy and allied forces observing memorial services. The funeral follows his death from heart attacks, with a church service in Manchester New Hampshire where he once published a newspaper. Dr. Fred S. Buschmeyer will lead the rites.

Mrs George dies in Indiana after long illness

Mrs Mary Elizabeth Knees George widow of Robert Burns George died at her home 17 Water Street Indiana on Saturday afternoon April 29 1944 at 3 05 PM. Born October 16 1867 in Armstrong County she married July 10 1890 and lived in Elderton before moving to Indiana 31 years ago. Surviving daughter Ruth Jensen of Cleveland and brothers John and George Kness of Apollo. She belonged to Whitesburg Presbyterian Church Indiana Chapter Eastern Star and Sorosis Club. Services Tuesday May 2 1944 at 1 30 PM at Robinson Funeral Home with Rev How ard M. Thomas officiating. Burial Whitesburg Cemetery. Ice cream ad text follows.

Double death by own action near Blairsville

An alleged love affair ended in a double death by own action in a car on Burrell Two school grounds near Blairsville. Joseph Fircott, 26, Wilton, Westmoreland Co, and Catherine Petripovic, 22, Blairsville, were found unconscious in a running car filled with carbon monoxide fumes. Fircott died before aid arrived. Petripovic survived briefly, dying later at Indiana Hospital. Police report the deaths as carbon monoxide poisoning with intentional self harm. holes were found in the car floor and exhaust pipe. Authorities believe Fircott cut the floor hole and punctured the exhaust after parking on school grounds. Both victims were employed at Acme Dye Co. plant.

Blairsville Leads Blood Drive With Record Pints Donated

Blairsville again tops Indiana County in the opening phase of the blood donor campaign. The Blairsville mobile unit collected 608 pints, 1 pint over the quota, at the Laboratory School site as the all week drive began. County Red Cross officials urge prompt appointments to meet the 1525 pint county goal, recognizing civic groups and individuals for strong cooperation.

Paper Pickup Ends Tomorrow on Philadelphia Street

Scrap paper collection runs Tuesday between 9:00 A.M. and noon on Philadelphia Street and all north streets. Business houses on Philadelphia Street will help by placing their scrap paper in front of stores.

Wreck kills two on New York to St Louis train near Trafford

Pittsburgh AP May 1 reports the head locomotive crew of the Jeffersonian were killed when the New York to St Louis passenger train struck a derailed freight east of Trafford. Engineer Walter Klein and fireman R Briggs died. engineer Joseph Campbell and fireman Donald Burk were unharmed. All 600 passengers uninjured. Four main tracks blocked and seven freight cars derailed.

Judge Holly Hears Ward Arguments

Federal Judge William H. Holly heard Montgomery Ward and Company pleas to dissolve a restraining order on plant operations. The hearing, before NLRB trial examiner Samuel H. Jaffee, set an election on union representation by June 7 if required. Troops were withdrawn from the plant Saturday.

Allies launch new US station as April bombings pace invasion

London May 1 AP The Allies press the nerve war with a new US broadcasting station in Britain telling occupied Europe that Allied armies will soon come from the west and south. In a seventh day of heavy bombing, 1000 tons of bombs and 3000 aircraft pounded targets in France Italy and Germany, with Genoa Milan and Paris area attacked and German fighters largely destroyed. Stalin urged eastern and western onslaughts to finish Nazi tyranny as Red Army repelled local German thrusts in Poland and Sevastopol fleets.

Former Local Teacher Dead

WILLIAM BERNARD MILLER, 37, director of the Hershey Pat Vocational School, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, on April 27 after a prolonged illness. Born in Creekside, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Miller and held degrees from Indiana State Teachers College and the University of Pennsylvania, with PhD work at Columbia and USC. He taught mathematics at Hershey Vocational School, physics at Hershey Junior College, and directed the Vocational School for two years. He leaves his widow Evelyn Mary McCarthy of Los Angeles, two children, his parents, a brother and two sisters. Friends may visit at Creekside. A Requiem High Mass will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bernard Catholic Church, Indiana, with interment in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Sergeant Glover to be Retired at Age 16

Sergeant Desates A. Glover of Pittsburgh whose Air Medal was recently awarded is being retired from the U S Army Air Force at age 16 after being grounded for underage during six missions including one to Berlin. He enlisted in 1942 at 14 by misrepresenting his age and hopes to re enlist for pilot training when legally old enough. Members of the Eastern Star will hold services for Mary K. George at Robinsons Funeral Home this evening at 7 80 pm.

Philadelphia May 1 AP G Mason Owlett president of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association calls the federal government seizure of Montgomery Ward and Company a copugnant piece of tyrannical blackjacking and says it will turn people against Washington bureaucracy He telegrams Sewell Avery board chairman praising his stand.

Miners Under 22 Yrs To Be Drafted

Harrisburg May 1 Abc press dispatch reports Pennsylvania coal mining draft boards began releasing miners under 22 for processing and possible induction per a State Selective Service directive issued April 12. The directive also authorizes Solid Fuels Administration representatives to use form 424 special for registrants ages 22 through 25 with at least three years of coal mining experience.

Siamese Twins Born To Widow In Phoenixville

Siamese twins joined at the pelvis enter a second day at Phoenixville Hospital. Doctors say they may never walk and cannot be separated, with one showing poor circulation. The mother, Mrs Macy Stierly, is widowed after her husband Harold died in a motorcycle accident two months ago. The twins weigh about 4 pounds and share a single foot with one toe, with outer legs and torsos well formed.
