Fourth S. S. Group For New Cumberland Classification

The fourth Selective Service consignment of the week from Local Board 3 left Indiana at 8 06 this morning. Fifteen Navy volunteers departed for Pittsburgh half an hour earlier. The New Cumberland group led by acting corporal Peter J Allan of Robinson marched to the hay station behind the Municipal Band with a Legion escort, as customary gifts were exchanged and farewells said. The group included many teen aged boys, with Corporal Allan pictured on the left in the top photo and Robert Leroy Long of Clymer beside Chester Long, Court House caretaker, in the same image. the Navy group shows Arnold Telier of Commodore as acting corporal in the first row.

Jurors for June Court Named for First Week

Twenty four grand jurors and seventy petit jurors for June were summoned as the first week schedule. Names include J Purl Bennett foreman and Cyrus Campbell among others. A Blairsville area crash injured three teens and left a fourth unhurt when a car struck a utility pole on Route 119 near South Wayne Avenue late last night. Driver Ralph Parana reported lighting a cigarette caused loss of control. wires fell, cutting service. Parana bruised and shocked. Lavara Blose and Irene Barto injured. Stephen Parana also hurt.

Two Held in Money Theft in Indiana

James J. Gulace and Albert Buzzinutti were charged with the theft of $105 from John Mye. s on March 14 and remanded to jail after a hearing before Squire Walter H. Jackson. They were linked to Edward and Anthony Gilace, also jailed. James, 26, is a deserter from the U. S. Army since January 26, with a second similar offense noted. Forecaster Warns of Frost and Cold Start to May

Strong winds and snow flurries usher May into Western Pennsylvania with near record cold. Temperatures dipped below freezing as the day opened, with a forecast night near 20s and frost. The cold record for tomorrow sits around the low thirties, tied to 1876 and 1879.

Indiana High School Student Dies at 13

Robert Lee Sutton, 13, son of Mrs. Leora Sutton, of Indiana, died at 1:25 p.m. Friday in Indiana Hospital after living in Homer City and Indiana. A Methodist Church member, Boy Scout, and Civilian Defense messenger, he is survived by his mother and maternal Stormey grandparents. Funeral services set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. David R. Graham officiating. interment at Greenwood Cemetery.

The Altoona district OPA reminds consumers that red ration stamps E F G H and J will be used for meats cheese butter fats and canned fish in May. Stamp E valid April 26 through May. Weekly validations begin May 2 9 16 23. Wholesalers and retailers urged to record April 23 May 1 sales and inventories by May 3 14. Nazis Cling Posts On Tunisian Front As Allies Press

Allied reports say American troops seized three more important localities and captured 200 prisoners on the Northern Tunisian battlefront. In Tunisia the British 1st Army retreated slightly along the center of a 100 mile western barrier as heavy fighting continued in the Medjez El Bab zone near the plain before Tunis. General Dwight D. Eisenhower's headquarters noted a slight withdrawal in one sector but overall positions remained firm amid repeated German counterattacks.

War Training Classes End at Indiana State Teachers College

Pennsylvania State College war training classes at Indiana State Teachers College awarded certificates to graduates in Industrial Accounting and Electrical Engineering foundations after 100 hours over 14 weeks. Instructors were Dr. C. M. File and J. Russell Guard. notable graduates include James W. Bennett and Margeret A. Beighler among many others. Registration for additional courses set for May 26 at Leonard Hall office, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Local Soldier Ray Drew Dies From Wounds in South Pacific

Staff Sergeant Raymond Drew of Indiana dies April 22 in the South Pacific Area. He was a 1939 Indiana High School graduate and served over a year in the Armed Forces. Surviving: parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Drew, two brothers Kenneth and Gilbert, and sister Virginia. Two cousins serve with the Royal Air Force. The report notes his prior World War I service with the British Army and a Wake Island raid memory. Also mentions Lieutenant Nastace and Lieutenant Moore in separate notes.
