In Spurr's biography of Alexandre Dumas a tale unfolds of a Provident French father famed for avarice waiting for his cloak when four noblemen tipped a servant and one man gave a 100 franc note. Dumas, grabbing his cloak, refused to return the note, saying the other gentleman had made the mistake.

Great Bangor Fire Destroys Library and Churches

A major blaze in Bangor Maine devastated the public library, churches, banks, and much of the business and residence districts. Firefighters arrived from surrounding towns but could not stop the flames, with two deaths and over twenty injuries reported. Militia patrolled the burned zone as residents fled.
