Tax Saving Rules on Dividends

Special tax rules apply to most dividends on 1964 federal returns per John H. Bingler. The 1964 act increases the dividend exclusion to 100 and halves the dividend tax credit to 2 percent, with eligibility limited to dividends from fully taxable U.S. corporations. Deposits in savings and loans and credit unions are interest, not dividends. On separate returns the first 100 may be excluded. on joint returns each spouse may exclude up to 100, but unused portions cannot be doubled. The 2 percent credit applies after the exclusion and is limited to the smaller of taxable income, total tax, or 2 percent of taxable dividends, and requires Form 1040.
