The bill favors lower income families with child care deductions and credits while offering upper middle class taxpayers sizable benefits from a new home credit and dependent credits. Rebate provisions return at least $100 to many, with $2,000 ceiling on a home purchase and full $4,800 child care deduction up to $35,000 income.
The depletion tax breaks have long aided oil and gas profits while covering hundreds of resources from gold and gems to oyster shells. Congress may strip major oil and gas deductions but keep smaller producers, with debates widening to coal and other minerals as Treasury officials question the broad use and rationale behind these exemptions.
Government inspection teams flagged 68 of the first 105 Medicare hospitals for health and safety deficiencies last year. Fire safety figured in 65 of 144 findings, with construction-type issues not affecting care. About 4,800 hospitals hold Joint Commission accreditation, while 1,900 unaffiliated hospitals are reviewed by state inspection teams.

The government seeks a $1,000 fine for violating federal aviation regulations. The plane had not yet taken off when he was removed.

The Central Advisory Council of the Mining Electro Mechanical Maintenance Association will hold its 28th annual meeting at Seven Springs on Tuesday April 1. Mitchell Day will host a banquet at 8 p.m. with Congressman John P. Murtha as the main speaker after golf and technical sessions. Past presidents and notable figures from mining and industry are invited as guests, and Cambria Branch hosts the event with ME-MMA reporting 2000 members and 150 patron firms in the tri state area.

Democrat candidates are Mark Wildauer Reynoldsville Andrew Laska Punxsutawney and Paul Fricker Brookville in that order. John Kotula Anita leads the Democratic sheriff slate followed by John Dinger Brookville. incumbent Paul A Evans Brookville runs unopposed in GOP. For Register and Recorder each party fields one candidate with incumbent Robert Lyle Punxsutawney as Republican and Anthony Cook Punxsutawney as Democrat.
The Civil Aeronautics Board approved higher fares for U S Europe air travel starting next Tuesday with increases from 3.6 to 16.5 percent. Youth and advanced buyers get discounts. The CAB rejected raises for U S Mexico and U S South America routes and for long Pacific origin flights. Caribbean routes rise 5 to 10 percent and North and Central Pacific promos rise 8 percent. Carriers must file new data within 20 days for review.
