Odd defense in oldster death at Philadelphia hospital
Philadelphia March 27 detective John Hanlon said James McCullough 41 employed at the Pennsylvania Hospital for Mental Diseases confessed to beating George Burroughs 86 to death with an iron bar after inviting him for liquor. McCullough claimed he killed to ensure they would go to heaven. Burroughs and McCullough were longtime hospital workers and close friends. A coroner jury in Chambersburg blamed Oscar Shriver 27 for strangling his eight year old nephew Floyd Shriver Jr and criticized officials for allowing him to remain in a home where he was a danger. Shriver had been an inmate at Pennhurst State School for 19 years.
