A crew of 26 sailors from Inshore Undersea Warfare Group II at Little Creek Amphibious Base fixed a leaking roof replaced a shaky wall rewired wiring and built a new outdoor headprivy for Dorothy Darnell. They completed the two day project with help from local merchants and a $592 welfare grant. Mrs Darnell is left with a dry room and paint to finish.
Bertrand Larramendy, 83, died after 60 years in this country and left cash, stocks, and property totaling $171,682 to the United States in his will. He designated $1 per relative if contested. No relatives contested. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Nichols said the estate is now in the U.S. Treasury.
Washington AP Frank Carlucci head of the Office of Economic Opportunity tells a Senate panel that federal help for the poor will not slacken as OEO agencies merge into the proposed Action Corps VISTA and other programs would stay in operation and gain grant access The Nixon administration requests 176 million dollars for the new unit with Peace Corps and other programs to move into Action Corps and Housing and Urban Development would lead the effort
Gov. Shapp criticized high priced schools and called on educators to trim state education cost increases and consider a 12 month year. He urged year round use of capital funds to cut idle money and improve education with smaller classes and community linked work, labeling new schools as Taj Mahals.
Gov. Shapp announced Pennsylvania will join ongoing research to rehabilitate deaf and hard of hearing children using a low frequency vibration system that transmits to the brain via sensory nerves. The program at Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Pittsburgh uses a new approach with equipment by Dr. Petar Guberina of the University of Zagreb, with plans for a visit by Shapp and Education Secretary Kurtz. Dr. Neal V. Musmanno helped initiate the project after learning of the technique through Washington contacts.
