A star studded crowd gathered at Rustic Lodge for the Pennsylvania Bituminous Council Holmes Safety Association banquet. Dr Walter R Hibbard Jr head of the U S Bureau of Mines presented the 1965 safety plaque to Allegheny Valley District Council for 17th time in 24 years as it posted a 15 56 accident frequency rate based on mining man hours. The Pennsylvania State Board of Law Examiners reports 71 of 122 applicants passed the January bar exam, a 58.2 percent pass rate. William T. Shulick of Blairsville, 25, among the successful, will report to Fort Gordon, Georgia, as a commissioned first lieutenant after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh Law School in 1965. Other passers include candidates from Allegheny, Clearfield, Erie, Somerset, Venango and surrounding counties.

The 1st Battalion of the 5th Marine Regiment, after six months training in Hawaii, led a combined amphibious and helicopter attack 35 miles southeast of Saigon. They seized a seven mile beach at the river delta mouth as part of Operation Jack Stay, aiming to clear guerrillas along Long Tao and Saigon rivers. The unit, commanded by Lt. Col. H.L. Coffaman, is famed for World War II Guadalcanal and Korea service.

Five year old Judy Lynn Funsch, a 28 pound heart surgery patient at the University of Michigan Hospital, was lifted from restricted diet after her recovery. She enjoyed a hot dog and hamburger with no appetite loss as doctors noted she may eat what she desires. Her mother reported Judy’s condition improved from good to fair, while pneumonia relapse followed. A team of 10 surgeons operated March 11 to remove a pulmonary vein obstruction aiding oxygenated blood flow. Judy has faced 18 episodes of pneumonia and received well wishes from Jerry Lewis and Frank Sinatra, who spoke with her mother. Judy does not know Sinatra, but is aware of Nancy Sinatra.
