Washington AP reports that U S crimes rose 9 percent in 1975 while murders fell for the first time in over a decade, with 1975 murder totals down 1 percent from 1974's level. FBI preliminary data cover 8,265 agencies and note regional and city variations.
The Colonial Flag retop flag salute marks the McCreary Tire and Rubber Co bicentennial. The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry carried Washington’s escort colors, with historic service from Philadelphia to Boston in 1775 and through Trenton Princeton Brandywine Germantown. The flag will fly for two weeks.
PUNXSUTAWNEY There is no recent word from either side in the strike idling about 700 workers at the Rola Jensen plants in Punxsutawney and Hawthorne. The two plants have been closed for ten days and neither side had speculation on when meetings would occur. Pickers remained at both sites around the clock.
In Punxsutawney the Jefferson County PTA Council elected officers at its annual organizational meeting held at Bell Township School. Elected were Lois Palmer president, Richard Butler first vice president, Diane Dean second vice president, Donald Neal treasurer, and Joyce London secretary. The council announced the May 25 banquet at Anchor Inn and the June 5 Spring Conference at Apollo Ridge High School. Speakers included Nancy Covert on the Penn State Extension service and Pat Barber on movie ratings.

U S intelligence specialists warn that Ian Smith's white Rhodesian regime cannot survive a prolonged guerrilla conflict with black nationalists. They expect fighting to intensify next rainy season, with 3,000 regulars and 10,000 reserves against about 1,000 guerrillas inside Rhodesia and 4,000 trained fighters near Mozambique. South Africa won’t aid Smith, Vorster warns, and a palace revolt is deemed unlikely.
About 20 residents attended a public hearing in Courtroom One on Indiana County public transportation plans led by Rural Transportation Alliance. The proposal would use five 12 passenger vans plus possible later expansion to seven to twelve vans, with routes serving Salisburg Armagh Clymer Home and Indiana and funded largely by federal money over two years.
The Penns Manor Future Farmers of America held its annual parent and member banquet at the high school. Awards included citrus fruit sales top in junior division to Andy Cramer first and Steve Beilchick second. senior division first Leon Kensey second John Walker. David Miller received outstanding senior award sponsored by Death Ag Research Inc. Others earned certificates for placing in Penn State competitions. Sponsors recognized included LaCarte Enterprises and Yellow Creek State Park among others. Dan Rowley narrated work experience slides. state senator Patrick Stapleton spoke on agriculture policy.
In Spokane County Sheriff deputies program wives ride along on patrols to understand their husbands work. About a dozen of 64 patrolmen’s wives have joined eight hour tours, signing waivers and staying in the car during dangerous calls. Wives report better understanding and appreciation of police duties and dangers.
Daniel Guy of Lucernemines displays work at McSorley’s Restaurant in Indiana. Sponsored by the Indiana Art Association, of which he is a member, and connected to the Sculpture Society of Pittsburgh. Guy, Horner Center High School graduate, studied at IUP and has taught in Mereesport since September 1972. His favored media are painting and sculpture.
Washington County jury convicts 20-year-old David A. Chacko of second degree murder in the shooting death of 87-year-old William Williamson during a burglary at his Finleyville trailer home. The verdict carries a mandatory life sentence. Chacko admitted being present but claimed two others fired the fatal shot.
A five year old Donora girl was struck near her home and died. Authorities charged the driver, Noteen E. Tartt, 18, with involuntary manslaughter. The coroner reported a broken neck and internal injuries. The incident occurred Wednesday night at a Donora location near Charleroi Hospital.
