Stanford Electron Gun Fired A Milestone in Physics
Stanford researchers fired the new electron gun as one-fifteenth of its barrel was in place, generating a 1.3 billion electron volt beam the highest in a linear accelerator in America. The full 2 mile long Stanford Linear Accelerator Center will cost $114 million, employ about 1,000 people, and begin operation in 1967 as a nationwide facility for high energy physics research.
