Pentagon survey cites housing discrimination at many bases
A Pentagon ordered survey found housing discrimination against Negro servicemen at about 90 percent of U S bases. only 31 of 305 bases received a clean bill. Alfred Fitts said progress came via negotiation, easing off base schooling, transport, and access to parks and libraries. No future policy was outlined. The report notes variation across Northern and Southern bases and cites police treatment as an area to report.
