Mother and twins die at Salina

A Salina woman Margie Stover Sloan 24 and her twin daughters died after a pneumonia battle began last Thursday. The twins were born Tuesday at 2 30 pm and died at birth while the mother died five and a half hours later. Burial was in Poke Run Cemetery after rites at Poke Run Presbyterian Church. She left a husband a 3 year old daughter and four brothers and four sisters. The Rev John Berryhill led services with the Rev D L Martens assisting.

King George Bestows Maundy Pence on English Poor

Westminster Abbey witnessed King George and Queen Mary presiding over the Maundy ceremony. Sixty-seven elderly men and women each received sixty-seven pence in silver, plus gold allowances of four pounds sixteen shillings for men and four pounds five shillings for women. The event, revived to honor historic royal humility, dates back to about 406 A.D. and was carried into the Abbey by a uniformed yeoman.

Substitute beer tax urged to balance budget

Senator Bingham leads a push to replace the discarded sales tax with a four cent per pint tax on legalized four per cent beer sold for hotel and table use, claiming it could raise $600,000,000 to $1,000,000,000 annually and balance the budget. States vote on repeal of Prohibition in nationwide poll

New York report shows Kansas leading the dry column with 3,040,086 ballots cast. The repeal side held a slim 0.1 percent edge in the first week of tabulations, with Nevada ranking as the wettest state at 83 percent repeal support. District of Columbia returns show 22.09 percent for continuation.
