Missing Tunnelton Girl Identified By Police As Body Found

Indiana County police and coroner confirm 16-year-old Barbara Ellen Bruzda of Saltsburg RD 1 (Tunnelton) is the badly decomposed remains found along Locust Road near Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. 2-A mine. Identified by dental and X-ray records after she was last seen Oct 23, 1978. Autopsy underway. foul play not ruled out.

Motive Unknown as British Ambassador Shot in Hague

In the Hague two gunmen shot British Ambassador Sir Richard Sykes and his Dutch valet during morning rush hour outside the ambassador’s residence. Both victims died at a hospital. Police offered no motive and said the attackers fled into traffic. The incident prompted condolences from London and a half staff at the Foreign Ministry.

Thornburgh outlines state cuts and audit probe plan

Gov. Thornburgh announced a two part effort to cut costs and curb abuses. He plans to trim the state workforce by about 1 005 positions and reduce the auto fleet to save roughly 29 million annually while disbanding PennNews to save 600 000 a year. He ordered an internal probe into travel and contracting practices led by officials Wilburn and Baran.

Pennsylvania Blacks Face High Jobless Rate in 1978

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Pennsylvania had the nation’s second highest unemployment rate for black workers in 1978 though overall state unemployment fell to 6.9 percent from 7.7. Whites drop to 6.1 while blacks fell from 19.4 to 17.5. Nationally, all workers’ rate dropped to 6.0 with whites at 5.2 and blacks at 11.9.
