The House passed bills to raise pay for the next governor to 35000, for the next General Assembly to 15000, and increased judges, lieutenant governor, and 20 department heads pay to 20000. Senate must decide.
In Ebensburg Pa two brothers Gust Traveny of Beaver Valley and Fred Traveny of Coalport had malicious mischief charges dismissed for lack of evidence after the Commonwealth failed to prove the dynamite at the Dean Coal Co tipple tied to them. Judge George W. Griffith sustained the demurrer and dismissed.
A Santa Monica housewife obtained a divorce after alleging her husband spanked her with a shoe when she questioned lipstick marks on his shirt. She testified he replied he would treat her as a child for asking childish questions, then paddled her.
Hollywood reports Marty led the Oscars, winning Best Picture and Best Actor for Ernest Borgnine, who rose from $2,300 in earnings to fame. Anna Magnani won Best Actress for The Rose Tattoo, with Jack Lemmon and Jo Van Fleet taking supporting honors. Paddy Chayefsky won for Original Screenplay. Delbert Mann for Best Director.
The 40 et 8 stage event Hell on Wheels will be performed tonight at 8:00 pm in the auditorium of Indiana Joint High School. Joan Welch of Creekside stars among three lead paraplegic actors, with proceeds funding the nurses training scholarship fund for the 40 or 8 organization.
A New York report notes daylight saving time will begin at 2 a.m. April 28 in most states and the District of Columbia. Some areas extend it to late October. The United States asked the U N Security Council to assign Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold to a peace mission to ease Israeli Arab tensions. The resolution proposes a force pullback, free observer movement, and local arrangements to prevent incidents. Britain and France reportedly back the plan. Hammarskjold previously secured Egyptian Israeli agreement to pacify the El Auqa area and pledged peaceful conflict settlement. Israel seeks Western arms, insisting Nasser will ignore U N warnings.
In Harrisburg Gov Leader signed a law unfreezing state aided school construction funds in Pennsylvania raising the ceiling from 425 to 625 million dollars immediately and rising to 925 million by 1959. The measure also caps per pupil costs at 1100 dollars for elementary and 1700 dollars for junior or senior high schools.
Frank Doyle long time resident of this community died at his home yesterday morning. He was 86. A complete obituary appears in today's paper. Harrisburg action tied a plan to pay a Korean War veterans bonus with a constitutional amendment to authorize a 150 million dollar bond issue and a graduated income tax. The plan, needing approval by 1955 and 1957 legislatures and a statewide vote, would fund the bonus for those in service June 25 1950 July 21 1953 and allow the tax levy to continue after bond repayment if needed. Governor Leader reportedly favors a graduated levy, while Readinger cites the plan as the path to pay the bonus.
In Omaha a girl cried herself to sleep after her pup was shot. A hundred twenty miles away a lost puppy shivered on rags in a filling station while winter storm haulers radioed Cathy Katzenberger, six, heartbreak. Omaha trucker Larry W. Davis and others voted to reunite them, delivering the pair to each other and deeming it worthwhile.

Beaver Pennsylvania authorities scheduled laboratory tests to determine foul play in the mysterious death of 4 year old Patricia Mae Patton of Industry. The body was found yesterday on a steep hillside near her home. Autopsy did not reveal cause of death and found no glandular condition or bruises. Neighbor Milo Adams found the child after her mother reported her missing. The Patton family includes six other children. Father Thomas Patton, 38, works as a plant guard at Crucible Steel Co. The case remains under investigation.
Dr Jonas Selk, developer of anueparalytic pollo vacene, warns parents against a fourth shot as vaccine supply remains tight and priorities must be observed. County commissioners Harvey Orr Dee Miller and Harold McCormick unanimously pass a seven mill budget with six mills for general fund and one for institutional fund. Real estate owners will pay the same tax as last year under the plan approved this morning.
Adlai Stevenson, shaken by his Minnesota primary loss to Kefauver, will not quit the presidential race and plans to seek the Democratic nomination at the convention. Kefauver claims Minnesota vote signals a revolt against the farm program as he heads toward San Francisco.
The Aero Club of Pittsburgh proposes 1700 acres between West Newton and Smithton in Westmoreland County as a potential military airbase about 24 miles from Pittsburgh’s airport. Civil groups have opposed Pittsburgh airfield use and Allegheny County has refused renewal of 1979 leases despite a local aviation survey. The club argues the Westmoreland site would aid an economically depressed area.
Pat Thomas Price 39 of West Newton died yesterday at Westmoreland Hospital from injuries suffered Monday in a two-vehicle crash on Route 71. The accident involved an auto and a truck, and the victim succumbed to his injuries.
