Court Names 60 Jurors For April

Sixty Indiana County residents were named to serve as traverse jurors for the session beginning April 21. The list includes many residents across Indiana, Blairsville, Black Lick, Dillnera, Dixonville, Homer City, Saltsburg, and nearby townships with trades ranging from housewife to miner, laborer, factory worker, and clerk.

Brush Fires Plague Pennsylvania Forests

Dry winds and below normal rainfall across Pennsylvania create a tinderbox with numerous grass and brush fires. Samuel S. Cobb notes the worst area from east of Bedford County to Wilkes-Barre Scranton, with northern tiers in better shape and portions of the southwest dry. At least 17 fires have been reported in Mifflin County since Sunday, though no homes have been damaged. The state forestry department says conditions in the mountains and fields are very serious and towns have imposed outside burning restrictions.

Rioting after Farrell game injures eight officials youths arrested

In Pittsburgh 500 fans clashed in the Oak land area after a high school basketball game at Pitt Field House. About 20 youths were arrested as melee spread to the Negro Hill district. Police reported eight wounded including three officers, with a youth shot in the toe and a gun fired.

Homer City Notice Corrects School District Bid Details

A Wednesday edition error misstated purchases by Homer Center School District. Appel Visual Service, Inc. of Pittsburgh won bids for a Bell and Howell Autoload film sound 16 mm projector at 575 dollars and a Beseler Slide King Projector at 411 dollars under the NDEA Title III program, with the district to be reimbursed half the cost. The Eiffel Tower was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Paris Exposition.

Indiana Kite Flying Contest Opens March 20

Indiana hosts a state wide kite flying contest starting March 20 at 1 pm. Sponsored by the Indiana Jaycees and the Indiana County Tourist Promotion Bureau, it will be held on the McCreary Farm hill near Route 422 west of the Indiana Borough line with prizes in several categories. Erie Diocese Names New Bishop Alfred M. Watson

The Most Rev. Alfred M. Watson was named bishop of the Erie Diocese by Pope Paul VI, succeeding John F. Whealon who became archbishop of Hartford. Watson, a native Erie priest and former auxiliary bishop, expressed pride in serving in his home diocese and hoped to continue fostering goodwill and faith across communities. Installation is expected in about two months.

Peru Frees 2 Captured U.S. Boats

Peru freed two U.S. tuna boats after captains paid 25 000 dollars in fines. The seizure near Lima involved the Cape Anne and the San Juan, tied by a Peruvian torpedo boat within Peru’s claimed 200 mile fishing limit. San Juan’s captain paid 17 000 dollars. Cape Anne’s captain paid 8 000 dollars.
