American Legion Pushes 37 Amendments To War Risk Act

Washington March 20 The American Legion urged two weeks of hearings before a newly formed House committee on World War Veterans Legislation to push 37 amendments to the War Risk Insurance and Vocational Rehabilitation Acts. The omnibus bill drawn by Watson B. Miller and backed by Representative R C Johnston seeks broader hospital care for veterans, a five year presumptive period for tuberculosis and mental diseases, and field offices that handle compensation closer to veterans. Dr Kennon Dunham and Dr William F Lorenz spoke for the Legion on medical grounds. Atlanta section mentions business interests seeking to import as well.

Immigrant illiteracy debate at Georgia Un Literacy Conference

G W Powell of the American Legion denounces illiterate labor and immigration as a threat to American standards. He cites a New York Board of Trade letter praising illiterates for labor, calling industrial slavery and warning against rising immigration to boost profits. Powell condemns those advocates as unAmerican and opposes current immigration law. The report also lists unrelated local notices from Clarksburg and surrounding areas.
