Pope Appears in Public. Blesses 50,000 at Vatican

Pope Pius XII appeared at his Vatican window for the first time since illness two months earlier. A crowd of Italian Alpine veterans and others cheered as the 78-year-old pontiff raised his arms and blessed about 50,000 people, then knelt in response to the crowd. The scene ended with the bells of St. Peter’s ringing for 15 minutes. The Vatican hasn’t released the illness details beyond a severe gastric disturbance and a test-related need for X rays.

Newsman faces choice to stay or lose citizenship

London dispatch reports Alan Winnington, a Western correspondent for the Daily Worker, was told by the British consul in Peiping that his passport would not be renewed and was confiscated when he presented it. MacMurray Denies Wedding Plans Amid South American Trip

Screen star Fred MacMurray and actress June Haver were in South America discussing marriage but denied plans for a wedding. MacMurray said they would fly to Hollywood together soon without becoming husband and wife, dismissing a joke about Kingston Jamaica nuptials.
