A historical column argues women claim rights never theirs, cites moral failings of men and rising male idleness. It laments women forced into labor outside home and urges men to provide, hoping the so called woman question ends with a return to domestic life.
A string of March 18 notices report deaths, suicides, murders, and accidents across Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Items mention Thomas P Thorpe and others in Cleveland, a bank assignment in Canton, drownings near Parkersburg, a shoemaker murder in Shamokin, and gas asphyxiation in Philadelphia. Also noted are a suicide in Covington, a dynamite explosion near a city hospital in Cincinnati area, and the Suevic stranding off London with 400 aboard.
A letter from Mary A Miller of Philadelphia praises Doan’s Kidney Pills for rapid relief from backache and urinary troubles. She recounts her husband D P Ulers improvement since 1894, noting repeated successes without heavy lifting or strain. FosterMilburn Co Buffalo NY sells the remedy nationally.
A letter to Professor Chapman from Indiana Pa discusses farm arithmetic and pricing. It presents a farmer with three hog pens fed by different rations and asks how long to fatten, final weights, costs, and profits, then compares painting three barns by three painters with varied bids and payment expectations. The letter ends with endorsements for Devoe paints and local banks and carpet services.
Obituary notices record the deaths of Mrs. Lewie aged 72 of Indiana County a long serving Methodist Episcopal member with multiple marriages and a son Mitchell McNeal. Wellington Spires 62, retired railroad and Carnegie Steel Company engineer, died at Memorial Hospital Johnstown after Bright's disease. Nancy J. Griffith died at 74 in Armagh corner of Osklana and Eleventh streets following a coma. Samuel Reed 70, Civil War veteran, died at Blacklick township. funeral in Indiana and Oakland cemetery. Also notices include local church tributes and a medical advertisement for Preventics and Dr Shoop remedies, plus hatchery ads and local business notices.
An advertisement urges buyers to insist on Dr Shoop’s Cough Cure due to legal labeling rules. It cautions mothers to compare packages, warns against non labeled medicines, and claims the product is safe and effective for children. Daugherty Bros sell the remedy locally.
The Presbyterian congregation will hold a meeting on Monday April 1 at 7:20 p.m. to elect trustees and conduct routine business. Also advertised is a sale of laces and embroideries for waist and dresses at Helen B Vogel’s.
