Beirut reports three tremors at five minute intervals devastate south Lebanon and Bekka Valley leaving about 172 dead and 30 missing. Two villages destroyed. 25 towns affected as troops and police search wreckage while government radio appeals for calm and proclaims three days of mourning.
Indiana County endures its heaviest snowfall since 1950 with twelve to fifteen inches piling up countywide. Traffic slowed as cars and heavy tractor-trailers became trapped. crews worked to keep main highways open while secondary roads faced closures. By noon crews cleared streets and a three foot snowbank formed on Philadelphia Street, prompting one lane usage. County page 6.
The Associated Press reports Pennsylvania faced the heaviest snowstorm of winter across counties from Indiana to Erie, with 15 inches in Indiana County and up to 12 inches in Oil City. Snow caused road closings, bus and streetcar delays, and an overturned school bus in Pittsburgh. A storm moving from Wisconsin threaten to add more snow in the northwest before spring.
In Moorhead Minnesota the presidential primary nears its climax with Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver campaigning for Democratic delegates. Stevenson plans a major farm policy talk at Concordia College during Greater Moorhead Days while Kefauver adjusts his schedule to address audiences at the Moorhead Armory and nearby venues.
Saltsburg police arrested three teenage boys this week for looting cars parked near Saltsburg High School during basketball games. Police Chief J. C. Irwin said two suspects are 14 and the third is 19. The 14-year-olds were returned to their parents, while the 19-year-old faces a hearing at Justice of the Peace Cunningham's office Monday night.
Indiana Penn, the newspaper of State Teachers College Indiana, won first place among about 1,500 school publications at the 32nd Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention in New York. Judges weighed makeup typography and content. awards will be given at a Waldorf Astoria luncheon as delegates hear from leaders including Clifton Daniel and others.
Norman W. Fields, 40, of RD Coal Center Washington County, was jailed today for writing a threatening letter to President Eisenhower. He was arrested yesterday by Secret Service agents and arraigned before U.S. Commissioner Edward Snodgrass. Bond was set at $5,000.
A meteorite that struck Mrs. Hulitt Hodges near Sylacauga on November 30 1954 and sparked dozens of offers for sale has been donated to the University of Alabama. The nine pound fragment drew as much as $5000 but Mrs Hodges chose to give it to the university.
HOMER CITY A Homer City RD 2 man narrowly escaped serious injury when his car was struck by a PRR coal train at Zoldak's crossing about one mile south of John J. Emets. Emets, 35, of Homer City RD 2, suffered a scalp laceration and back bruises from being thrown from the vehicle. His car was under two feet from the tracks when struck. Engineer E J Holby said he sounded the whistle but the auto moved into the train's path. Emets was taken to Homer City by the train and rushed to a local physician, then to the Indiana Hospital for observation. Car damage about $400. The mishap occurred about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Reinforcements ring seven villages eight miles east of Tr aodos as house to house searches follow. Harrisburg AP reports Gov. Leader vetoed a bill aimed at speeding up 52 million dollars in capital stock taxes citing favoritism to large Pennsylvania firms. Senate Finance Committee chaired by Sen. Edward J. Kessler blamed for bias. A substitute bill is being drafted for next week to close the budget gap.
A Northeast and Mid Atlantic snow storm brought rain sleet and gales yesterday. At least 26 people died across Ohio New York Connecticut Maine and Massachusetts as transportation disruptions spread. An electrical storm struck eastern Pennsylvania and thunder was heard in New York City. Ships faced high seas off Scituate Montauk Point Norfolk and Atlantic City.

A 3 percent hotel occupancy tax took effect in Pennsylvania affecting hotels motels rooming houses and other lodgings. Resort package deals including lodging meals and entertainment are taxed in full. Guests staying more than 30 consecutive days become permanent and exempt. Pittsburgh area youth John Neshoff of Wilmerding was found dead in a bathtub last night. A McKeesport Hospital physician reported no bruises or injuries and suggested the boy probably dozed before death.
