Washington March 17 Congressional move to remove statutory limits on campaign spending drew opposition from Senator Hatch who called it a step backwards in honest elections. The Senate committee urged publicity on contributions to curb spending while noting evasion via independent committees and split donations. Hatch urged correcting deficiencies and stricter enforcement by parties.
The Al boon a District Office of Price Administration announced new supplemental gasoline coupons BT and C7 for eligible motorists, with other coupons E38 Ri and E1 E2 Ri R2 remaining valid. Ten Pennsylvania soldiers of the 308th General Service Engineer Regiment in France received Good Conduct Medals for exemplary behavior and fidelity at a regiment wide ceremony. The unit aided Cherbourg port reconstruction, built hospitals, and maintained medical institutions. Included was James P. Py트 of Homer City.
Mrs Priscilla Stiles of Indiana has received word that her son Pfc Stanley Stiles was seriously wounded in Germany on December 13 1944. He has been moved to an Army hospital in England and friends may write to him at Army Hospital Plant APO 68 care Postmaster Pfe Stanley Stiles ASN 33765994 Det of Pts 4147.
Washington physicist Dr George Gamow says the sun will expand as its interior burns out, potentially engulfing the Earth in about five billion years. Core temperatures reach 40,000,000 degrees while surface heat rises from 6,000 degrees. The process would gradually accelerate over millennia, he notes, producing hotter but imperceptible changes for Earth's inhabitants.
Blairsville names Robert E. Borland as acting borough manager for four months after his leave begins to take a post in Silverton Oregon. Borough clerk John A. Fatota will assume duties temporarily and a formal reply is expected within four months if Borland remains west.
Sergeant F. John Catalano, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Catalano of Rossiter Pennsylvania, was wounded in action in Luxemburg on December 24, 1944. He entered service April 3, 1943, trained at Camp Campbell Kentucky and Camp Phillips Kansas, served overseas in March 1944 with a tank division of the Third Army under General Patton. He is now an instructor at the U S Navy Hospital in Oakland California.
The Duke of Windsor, resigning as governor of the Bahama Islands, said he and the duchess will travel to New York in late April then possibly to Canada and Europe. He stressed the resignation is not a permanent exit from public life and expressed readiness to help where experienced. The couple will likely visit Nassau again as visitors after a successor arrives.
Washington March 17 Amid sharp lines from Democratic and Republican leaders a major tariff clash unfolds over a bill to extend the reciprocal act for three years and raise the State Department’s power to trim duties up to 75 percent on some goods. Critics warn it would sap U S economic defenses and threaten jobs, while supporters say it aids postwar peace by shaping permanent economic policy.
Allied columns from Patton and Patch pressed toward the Rhine as Third Army units advanced from the south and west. American forces seized Koenigswinter and Hoenningen portions while Remagen bridgehead held with Germans massing for a counterattack. First Army reported 1,128 prisoners as they widened the bridgehead and pushed into German territory along the Rhine.
Secretary of State Stettinius hopes the principle of free exchange of news will be included in international peace plans adopted by the United Nations at San Francisco. He said acceptance would aid lasting peace, in a letter made public by Joseph Leib of Arlington. Leib, head of the Des Moines post, urged other Legion groups to back the idea. Stettinius noted the Inter-American Conference also backed free information and urged international recognition at the San Francisco conference.
Dr Leslie Pinckney Hill, president of Cheyney State Teachers College, urged teachers and townspeople to spread the gospel of racial equality. He denounced outdated textbooks and called for peaceful, democratic action to erase color lines and ensure equal rights for all races worldwide.

State Police announce 1944 automobile registration plates expire at midnight March 31. Drivers using 1944 plates after March 31 may be fined ten dollars.
