Professor W N Guthrie argues marriage serves sacrifice not happiness, urges shedding false modesty to curb divorce. He contends society rests on the family, warns individualism weakens the state, and advocates a special tax on bachelors as a moral duty.
In Kittanning Pennsylvania on March 17 August Troutwein is described as insane after being sentenced to hang March 28. He demonstrates violent behavior and requests his German mother be brought to visit. Father J A Carrall failed to elicit recognition. The case drew statewide attention as Troutwein killed his wife in September 2003 and was convicted of first degree murder in December of the same year. Since then the pardon board has acted four times and the governor has recalled the death sentence twice.
In Harrisburg on March 17 Mr Creasy warned the House he would offer a resolution to discharge the city passenger railways committee from further consideration of his bill granting trolley companies the right to carry freight. The committee met after adjournment and reported the bill with a negative recommendation, ending it for the current session. The Ambler rural police bill was reconsidered and passed finally.
