Church groups split on parochial school loans

Washington AP a National Council of Churches executive said a majority of its board would oppose loans for parochial school construction while some members might support loans in theory. The group urged Catholic leadership not to oppose public school aid without parochial loans. Senate leader Mansfield pledged action on a private and parochial loan bill if Kennedy aid passes.

Surplus Food Due In Penna

A freight car loaded with canned pork and Bravy for distribution to the needy in Dauphin Lebanon and Westmoreland counties is due to arrive. The State Property and Supplies Department said the shipment totals 1300 cases with 800 cases of the meat for Westmoreland County and 390 for Dauphin and 110 for Lebanon.

CREMONA Italy AP an infuriated cow disrupted an animal sale charging dealers and buyers. Policeman Giacomo Redessi fired but missed as the cow knocked him aside. Carabinieri Spt Mario Astengo finally halted the rampage by firing at the animal as it thundered past, ending the incident.

A 105 pound hog from Par Kay Farm Beavertown Pa was named grand champion barrow of the eastern national spring hog show. The event drew more than 300 entries.

State Supreme Court to hear Elmo Smith death row appeal

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will hear an appeal by Elmo Smith, 40, of Bridgeport, convicted of murdering 16 year old Maryann Mitchell in Philadelphia during Christmas Week 1989. Smith was sentenced to death Feb 23 in Adams County, with lawyers filing the appeal Tuesday and the court scheduling the argument as required for death penalty cases.
