Harrisburg March 16 Democratic Senate leader tarry Shapiro said there would be no confirmations of Governor James many appointees to high posts. Nine Democratic votes are needed to reach the two thirds. If the session ends without action, governor James could issue recess appointments the day after adjournment.
Delegates from seventeen Monee Ludges attended the district Moose meeting in Cresson on May 7 with Charles Kissell Blairsville district president presiding. Reports indicated rising membership. Cresson Lodge initiated 96 candidates by the Apollo degree team. A Moose Legion frolic will be held in Cresson on March 26 with all districts participating, first time outside Johnstown. Next district meeting set for South Fork on May 14.

Washington March 16 Admiral Harold R Stark of Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania will head the navy for four years as chief of naval operations succeeding Admiral William D Leahy. Stark, 68, will take the post June 1 when Leahy retires. He commanded destroyers to the Mediterranean in WWI and directed the Atlantic squadron briefly last year. Captain John Henry Towers was named head of the Bureau of Aeronautics and Rear Admiral Thomas C Hart was chosen commander of the Asiatic Fleet with Yarnell to retire in October.

Obituary items note Mrs. Kate Brown widow of Edward Brown and mother of George Brown of Superior Dairy died at home in Ligonier. Six sons and a daughter survive with funeral at the daughter’s home on Main Street and burial in Ligonier Cemetery. Also Mrs. Lydia King Brothers, 71, of Westover R C died. survivors include several children and interment planned in East Ridge Cemetery, Barnesboro. Harry Reed, 71, former Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, died at his Blairsville home on South Stewart Street. survivors include wife Myada and three or four children. Funeral set for 2 p m Saturday with Rev EB Stephen presiding and Blairsville Cemetery interment.

A federal court jury heard an itemized damages claim against the American Federation of Hosiery Workers from Apex Hosierys seven week sit down strike. The plant losses totaled 1,483,000 in cancelled orders plus 67,700 for damaged machines and 54,161 for plant repairs. The company seeks 3,514,900 under an amended Sherman anti trust law. Union officials argued unauthorized acts by a few members. The trial entered its fourth day with testimony on riot damage and job stoppages.

Pomona Grange No 58 of Indiana County and Indiana Grange No 4656 meet at Zion Lutheran Church on Thursday March 30. The 113th Pomona session opens at 10 30 a m with reports from officers and committees and the address of welcome by H W Leech master of Indiana Grange and response by Charles H Miller master of Mahoning Grange. An afternoon program includes community singing led by Flora Fritz Henderson and a past master jewel presentation by John A McSparran followed by music by Brush Valley 2 Grange and motion pictures. Evening session features Indiana Grange program with lecturer Mrs Eugene Pounds and conferring fifth degree. Unfinished business reports of resolutions and closing remarks conclude the event.

Beverly Hills March 16 Police planned an autopsy to determine how Mildred Doherty 41 wife of a national magazine writer died in Benedict Canyon. Her body was found in a sloping thicket after a hike, with officers saying she likely fell from a narrow rocky trail Tuesday night. The writer exclaimed Mildred my wife upon being led to the body.
Pittsburgh March 16 Internal Revenue Collector William Driscoll reported first quarter income tax payments fell about 5 million dollars from the same period last year. Total payments reached 19,718,048.96 with 15,000 fewer taxable returns, though mail returns due today could add roughly two million to the total.
Miss Mary Gray of West Lebanon suffered head lacerations and possible concussion in an automobile accident on Route 422 two miles west of Indiana. Taken to Indiana Hospital, she rode with her brother Bayard Gray Jr. of West Lebanon, 18, when their car struck a small truck driven by Harry Fleming, 23, of R D 2 Indiana, then hit a culvert. Neither driver was injured.
Walton Wolfe, 39, of Indiana, a postal worker for 16 years, is to have a hearing March 8 on embezzling $4 from mailed matter. Postal Inspector H. K. Kimball filed the charges and a U S Commissioner ordered Wolfe held for the hearing.
