Washington March 12 Congress faced a push from rental property groups for a national 15 percent rise in residential rents to extend OPA price controls beyond June 30. Lawmakers showed coolness to a blanket hike, fearing voter impact, while property groups urged exemptions for new housing and a shift of control to states with their own rent laws.

In Philadelphia a Pennsylvania Superior Court decision dismisses Prudential’s appeal of a $1,292 verdict to Joseph Dick ertson over the death of his 18 year old son Richard. The 18 year old was deaf blind and paralyzed and died in 1940 after a fall while hospitalized over a year. The insurer argued death would have occurred within days from illness, but the court held actuarial tables and expert opinions cannot determine when a person will die.
Senator Connally called for a new big three meeting to discuss Russo American relations in plain language. He urged backing by a strong US military posture and said mutual understanding with Russia is possible if both sides honor the UN charter and avoid provocative acts. He emphasized unity within the United Nations to maintain peace.

Mysterious blast near Bradford Pennsylvania at 8 52 p m sent gray smoke and a sulphurous odor over a wide area two miles east of the city center. Residents reported tremors strong odor and shattered windows while newspapermen traced the center to Washington Avenue Extension. No damage or injuries confirmed by early checks.
OPA authorized a ten cent per barrel crude oil price increase that refiners say cannot be absorbed without raising gasoline and fuel oil prices. Jamal Effendi Husseini, chairman of the Palestine Arab party, testified before a British American committee that the sole solution to Palestine is an independent Arab state with democratic rights for all. He named the Grand Mufti Amin Effendi Al Husseini as the Arabs' first leader and urged British withdrawal to let Arabs and Jews settle matters themselves. He suggested Zionist leaders might abandon hope of a Jewish state if Britain pulled out. He added the Grand Mufti fled to Germany from British pursuit.
