FDR May Be Asked To Help Avert State Authority Strike
Harrisburg March 12 President Roosevelt may be asked to intervene to prevent a state wide strike by laborers on the General State Authority building program. AFL leaders warn work will halt Tuesday unless unemployed union members near the projects get jobs over relief workers. Col Augustine Janeway heads the Authority and says relief workers must be exhausted before hiring nonrelief workers under federal funds rules. McDevitt, president of the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, says the strike is approved by most unions in the state and involves several thousand workers. A conference with Governor Earle was arranged for Monday, with Janeway McDevitt and George Walters to attend. McDevitt appeals to Roosevelt, noting the president helped with a previous PWA agreement.

State Housing Authorities Without Quick Funds
Harrisburg March 12. Five Pennsylvania housing authorities face a delay in funds without a new federal appropriation. Charles Doyle, executive director of the Pennsylvania Housing Authority, said an additional 20 million dollars would be sought to sustain slum clearance. Existing allocations total 28.3 million of 30 million, with remaining 1.7 million sought by the Redadting Authority. Funds are exhausted for Harrisburg and Bethlehem, and new starts may be delayed pending congressional action. Pennsylvania’s share is capped at 80 million, with current allocations to Philadelphia Pittsburgh Allegheny County Allentown Chester Scranton McKeesport. Doyle toured Erie and Waynesburg and predicted a housing authority may begin at Erie.
