Thomas E. Zerbe, chairman of the evaluating committee, calls IHS "generally a good school" after a three day visit. He notes an ambitious philosophy focusing on individual student needs and compliments the flexible study program and advanced mathematics and science courses. A full Middle States report will take weeks.
Theodore C. Spaulding, 64, becomes the first Black judge on Pennsylvania's statewide appellate court and is sworn in as a member of the State Superior Court by President Judge Harold L. Ervin. His appointment by Gov. Scranton runs until January 2, with a full 10 year term pending election in November if renominated in May.

Summerfield Jack Summerfield of Indiana Rural Route 3 White Two announces his candidacy for Representative in the General Assembly from the newly apportioned 62nd district as a Democratic candidate. A World War II U S Marine veteran, he served on Iwo Jima and in Japan occupation. He attended NYU evening classes and Indiana University of Pennsylvania adult courses. He works as a steamfitter for Mechanical Contractors at Indiana University and was business representative for Local 381 of the Steamfitters Union. He aided the merger of Indiana and Johnstown locals. He is married to Lee Summerfield.
Patrick J. Reilly of McCreary Tire and Rubber Co was named Publicity Division Chairman of the Indiana Sesquicentennial committee. Other division chairs include John Shugrue Shick Printing Co Ray Goss WDAD James R. Clark McCreary Tire Ken Ramsey G Murphy Co and more. Merchants schedule Aug 5 and 6 bargain day sales as plans for antique car appearances and invited officials unfold. Next corporate meeting set March 24 at Bruno's.
Mrs. Jessie Landis age 109, widow of Judge Charles I. Landis who died in 1925, died Thursday night in Lancaster. Born February 20, 1857 she was a descendant of Paradise founder David Witmer. Her death follows a report placing Mrs. Thompson as the oldest Pennsylvanian.

The House Appropriations Committee backed President Johnson's request for 13.14 billion emergency funds to be used over 34 months. Most money funds military and civilian Viet Nam operations, with 415 million for economic aid and foreign aid, Laos, Thailand and the Dominican Republic.
The AFL-CIO published an AMA apology for depicting a labor leader as a bully pressuring union members to donate politically. The AMA also settled a libel suit by United Steelworkers official Paul Normile with a 25000 out of court payment in a case involving phonograph records and tapes.
The Eighth Annual Public Affairs Forum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will feature former Senator Kenneth Keating and Senator Albert Gore Jr. discussing decision making in American foreign policy. They will analyze the Cuban Crisis of 1962 and the Dominican Crisis of 1965 with emphasis on roles of Congress, the Foreign Service, the CIA, and the State Department. Complimentary tickets will be available. area TV stations will cover the event and WDAD will carry it on radio. Printed addresses will be distributed after the forum.
Five year old Judy Lynn Funsch underwent open heart surgery to correct a missing left pulmonary vein and a persistently open valve. A 10 member team operated four hours then added a tracheotomy procedure and she remains under close watch for two days.

Specialist 4 George R. Jones, 21, paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, was wounded in Tuy Hoa Vietnam when struck on the left side by hostile small arms fire. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Levis of Alverda and husband of Betty Brady. He previously earned the Army Commendation Medal in the Dominican Republic and is scheduled to complete his tour this September. He is a 1963 Penns Manor High School graduate.
A Circuit Court jury ruled Ellen Borden Stevenson unable to manage her affairs. The petition by her three sons and mother led to naming a conservator as assets fell from 400000 to 100000 and debts reached 80000. The sons include Illinois Rep. Adlai E Stevenson III and John Fell Stevenson of San Francisco.
U S Marine helicopter crews braved Communist fire to pull 59 survivors from Ashan Special Forces camp on the Laotian frontier. The rescue included five crewmen from two downed helicopters, one squadron commander, Vietnamese and Montagnard troops, and three dependent women. Meanwhile Viet Cong terrorists struck near Tan Son Nhut Airport injuring a soldier and four civilians.
Five Johnsonburg area youths aged 12 to 14 confessed to slashing brake lines on two school buses, averting potential tragedy on steep roads. The buses carry about 50 pupils each and the incidents were disclosed after a bus traveled a short distance. The boys released to their parents pending Elk County Court action.
Homer City mortician Patrick J. Hallow announced a bid for the Republican nomination in the new 60th Legislative District. The district covers much of southern Indiana and parts of Armstrong County. Hallow has run Hallow Funeral Home for 14 years and has long been active in local GOP circles. He is a 46 year old Homer City resident and a Rayne Township native with education from Plumville High School and the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Sciences.
