Harrisburg March 9. The State Government chose the laundry industry as the first to apply Pennsylvania s new minimum wage law for women workers. The act of 1997 provides for a nine member board with three employer three labor and three public members. Ralph M Bashore secretary of labor and Industry said he sent out letters seeking board members and about 17 000 women were employed in laundries at weekly wages between 11 and 12 dollars. Application to other service industries including restaurants and hotels would follow. Research over months evaluated wages hours and conditions using a test group of about 6 000 employees. Departments plan to start wage minimums for women workers in department stores later.
