Vietnam Revolt Struggles Reported Near Quang Tri

Seven battalions of the South Vietnamese army plus artillery and tanks were sent to quell a revolt in central Vietnam around Quang Tri Balang area where deserters harassed regulars with mortar fire. Reports say many soldiers deserted last month. twelve deserters killed and captured. Hoa Hao rebels clashed with Viet Nam forces near Bathan in Camau peninsula region. details indicate a chaotic, fluid security situation.

Capetown Plans Large Radar Network Over Five Years

CAPETOWN South Africa will build a massive radar network over the next five years to guard against nuclear attack. The plan, with a project cost around 15 1000,000, was among defense measures announced by Defense Minister F C Arasmus who warned of continuing global conflict and urged international cooperation to cover unprotected vital areas. He said the South African army would expand in eight years and the army structure would be revised.

Evacuations and Milk Consumption Figures Reported

Paris dispatch notes 35,000 of 50,000 Chinese in North Vietnam evacuated after the Geneva armistice. The 35,000 move to the non Communist South, per the French Press Agency. An average American consumed 352 pounds of fluid milk in 1954 versus 399 pounds in 1945.

Labor Skills Decreasing in America Says Mitchell

Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell warns at an Economic Club of New York gathering that current work skills among American workers have deteriorated dangerously and could threaten national survival. He urges greater emphasis on skill, integrity, and know-how to compensate for fewer numbers, stressing everyday labor powers as key to economic and military strength.
